Tips for Selecting Foundation

Foundations {or bases} are used to create a clear, healthy-looking complexion in the right color. All blemishes and shadows should be painted out, yet the effect should be natural-looking and not heavy in texture. The feature of the face and to minim’s the less desirable ones.

Selecting a shade of foundation to match someone’s skin tone is the first step and the most important one. At first this will seem difficult, but with time and practice it will become automatic.

The foundation should match the person’s skin tone, and be natural-looking. At the same time it’s should provide an even film of color and cover minor irregularities of skin tone such as redness. To test a foundation shade, place a tiny amount on the forehead: if the color is correct, it will blend easily with the natural tone of the skin.

There is no need to have hundreds of different you color sense you will learn to mix a color for any skin type.

Each person’s skin tone is a combination of red, brown, white and yellow, mixed in various combinations. To learn how to match a foundation color, start by mixing a small quantity of this color together and make an exact match for your own skin tone.

Then do the same for as many other people as you can. Soon you will get used to estimating the amount of yellow in someone’s skin tone at a glance.

For black skins you will need more red and yellow than for white ones, otherwise the foundation will appear grey and dull.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS:

Liquid foundations Used for natural look on young or clear skin, often for beauty work. They are applied using a damp sponge.

CREAM FOUNDATIONS:

Used for older skin or for greater coverage on younger skin. They should be used lightly.

PANSTICK FOUNDATIONS:

Used for heavy coverage, as in sticks; they have a grater density of pigment.

Being greasy, they need powder to set them.

FOUNDATIONS:

Used for poor complexions, and to cover scars, spots and blemishes.

PANCAKE FOUNDATIONS:

Used for body make-up and where a ‘flat’ look is required, as on bald heads. Pancake is normally too flat and dry for the face. It does not rub off on clothing, which makes I ideal for use on the body.  It is also used for fantasy face painting. Pancake is water – based foundation, applied using a wet sponge; they dry quickly to a mat finish.

When dry they can be buffed with a cloth to give a natural-looking sheen.

Pancake is available in all colors as well as in skin tones.

TINT FOUNDATIONS:

Used only on very clear skin or to enhance a tan. No powder is required. Tints can look good on men’s skin.
