Tips for Hair Care | Shampooing

Shampooing the hair cleanses it & makes it springy & fragrant. Choose your shampoo according to the condition of your scalp.

A dry scalp feels ‘tight’ & can become so tense that headaches result. Over shampooing can remove all trace of natural oil. Try diluting shampoo with water before applying it to hair.

With a greasy scalp, the skin is quite pliable – you can move your scalp under your hand. For this scalp type, use warm, not hot, water & give an extra final rinse.

A normal scalp looks healthy & has a good, normal skin color if your scalp is normal, concentrate on it more than your hair with the first application of shampoo. With the second, massage suds in to the bulk of the hair.

With dandruff – prone scalp which visibly sheds scales, make sure you rinse of every speck of shampoo & wash combs & brushes at the same time.

How often should you shampoo?

As often as is necessary for your kind of scalp – once a week certainly, but perhaps as frequently as every day. As long as you are using the right shampoo, you needn’t worry, either about drying out your scalp, or encouraging a greasy scalp to become more oily.

THE SHAMPOO DRILL:

I. First brush out all tangles; brushing also removes loose dirt & dandruff.

2. Massage your entire scalp, briskly but gently, with a rotating movement of hands

& finger tips.

3. Wet your hair or over with warm water & either spot shampoo all over the whole

scalp or pour shampoo in to the palm of your hand & apply it to the hair.

4. Lather well & massage the shampoo well into your scalp with the same massage

movement – a rotation of hand & finger tips (not nails).

On this first application, concentrate mostly on shampooing the scalp rather than

the hair; your scalp needs laundering most.

5. Rinse of with warm water.

6. lather again & repeat massaging movement, paying special attention to the area  around the hair line where make-up & debris can collect then rub the ends of

your hair between your palms carefully with suds. Note: if you are washing your

hair almost every day this second application of shampoo is not usually necessary.

Equally, if your scalp is very greasy you might prefer to stick at one shampoo

over – enthusiastic shampooing can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce

more oil.

7. Rinse the entire head thoroughly. Rinse & rinse again until you are absolutely certain also is rinsed away a shower attachment giving a constant flow of water is ideal for this; you can just  continue rinsing until the water runs clear any shampoo not rinsed away will have a dulling effect on your hair.

8. Finish with a cold water rinse to give your hair more shine & gloss, then squeeze gently to remove excess water. At this stage, you may want to apply conditioner.

9. Blot your hair with a towel. Never rub too fiercely; apart from a danger of damaging the hair, you can also stir up the sebaceous glands to renewed activity – something to avoid, if your scalp is inclined to be greasy.

10. Go on to dry your hair immediately, or wrap it in a towel, turban-style for a few minutes. The towel will absorb all the moisture & when you unwind it, your hair will be at the damp-dry stage.
